Greek MPs engage in heated televised confrontation
A sharp televised confrontation occurred between New Democracy MP Makarios Lazaridis and PASOK MP Nadia Giannakopoulou during an ANT1 broadcast. The dispute escalated when Lazaridis made claims regarding the OPEKEPE scandal, alleging that Giannakopoulou had approached him at the Parliament cafe to inquire about potential revelations from the investigative committee.
Giannakopoulou vehemently denied these claims, labeling them "fabricated lies" and a "vile personal attack," which led to an emotional outburst on air. Following the incident, Lazaridis issued a public apology via social media, stating that the debate had exceeded the bounds of political discourse in his attempt to defend the government's work.
In response, PASOK released a statement condemning the incident as "toxic political speech" and holding the leadership of New Democracy and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis responsible for the conduct. Giannakopoulou has indicated she will pursue legal action regarding the allegations made against her.
