Greek municipalities conduct drainage cleaning to prevent flooding
Municipalities in Greece are conducting preventive maintenance on drainage systems to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
In Pyrgos, the Civil Protection department is cleaning manholes and removing debris, vegetation, and other accumulated materials from stormwater runoff points. Efforts are being prioritized near schools and areas with high concentrations of debris. Deputy Mayor Athanasios Champrinos has urged citizens not to dispose of bulky items or rubble in streams and manholes, noting that municipal personnel and equipment are on standby in coordination with the Fire Service and the Region of Western Greece.
Similarly, the Municipality of Lykovrysi-Pefki is intensifying the cleaning and maintenance of manholes across all neighborhoods. Crews are performing daily inspections and interventions to ensure the smooth flow of water, specifically targeting main roads and high-risk areas. Mayor Marios Psychalis stated that the municipality is working methodically and proactively rather than waiting for extreme weather events to occur. Deputy Mayor Nikos Giannopoulos emphasized that prevention is the most important tool for protection against heavy rainfall.
