Greek municipalities launch Heraklion housing support center and open Ellinikon Sports Park

The Municipality of Heraklion announced plans to build a modern 20‑bed support centre for vulnerable residents, aiming to alleviate pressure from the city’s housing shortage. Deputy Mayor for Social Welfare Stella Archontaki‑Kalogeraki said the facility will serve about 20 beneficiaries and will include residential and administrative services, pending regional funding.

Athens’ Ellinikon Sports Park opened on 20 July with free entry, offering Olympic‑standard facilities such as a 1,070‑seat track, four football fields, basketball and tennis courts, extensive green areas, 124 hotel rooms and ample parking. The park will operate daily, with plans to add an Olympic‑size swimming pool by 2026 and further sports venues by 2028.
