Greek municipalities show extreme water and sewerage fee disparities

A new study by topographic engineer and statistician Nikos Kardoulas reveals significant disparities in water supply and sewerage fees across Greece's 332 municipalities for the year 2026. The research highlights extreme variations in annual household costs, noting a lack of a unified regulatory framework which contributes to social inequality.

Spetses has been identified as the most expensive municipality, with an average annual charge of €734 per household. Other high-cost areas include Paxoi (€649), Ydra (€573), Psara (€493), and Folegandros (€478). Conversely, the municipality of Agrafa is the least expensive in the country, charging only €41 annually. Other low-cost municipalities include Meganisi (€45), Kentrika Tzoumerka (€50), Amaro (€53), and Plastira Lake (€55).

Regional findings show that in Central Greece, Thebes is the most expensive municipality at €249, while Agrafa remains the cheapest. In the Attica basin, Phyle is the most expensive (€230) and Spata-Artemida is the cheapest (€89). Among larger metropolitan areas, Ioannina recorded the highest fees at €309, while Larissa recorded the lowest at €141.
