Frigate Kimon attracts crowds in Thessaloniki

The advanced FDI (Belharra) class frigate Kimon is currently docked at the port of Thessaloniki, drawing significant public interest. Citizens of all ages have formed long queues to tour the vessel's decks and learn about its operational capabilities as part of the celebrations for the anniversary of October 28, 1940.

Captain Ioannis Kizanis stated that the ship represents a major technological leap for the Hellenic Navy, moving from 1980s-era technology to cutting-edge 2020s systems. The frigate features advanced AESA radar, Aster missile vertical launch systems, and multi-role capabilities including area air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and special operations support.

The Kimon is the first of four FDI-class frigates ordered by Greece. The second vessel, Nearchos, is scheduled to be received on October 30 at the Naval Group shipyards in Lorient, France. The Kimon will remain open to the public in Thessaloniki through Tuesday, October 27, with specific time slots designated for schools and the general public.
