Greek New Left faces parliamentary split as seven MPs depart

Gabriel Sakellaridis, secretary of Greece's New Left party, wrote to members after seven parliamentarians announced their independence, prompting the dissolution of the party's parliamentary group. Sakellaridis said the split was not a surprise and linked it directly to the creation of the Greek Left Alliance (EL.A.S.) by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, describing it as the primary reason for the departures.

He praised the former parliamentary group's work over the past two and a half years, citing interventions on issues such as the war, military equipment, the energy crisis, rule of law, surveillance scandals, the OPEKEPE case, and environmental policy. While lamenting the loss of a strong opposition presence in the legislature, Sakellaridis affirmed that New Left will reorganise, maintain its political activity, and prepare for upcoming battles through collective decision‑making and dialogue.
