Greek olive oil producers demand urgent aid amid production crisis
Greek olive oil producers are facing a severe crisis that threatens the economic and social stability of key agricultural regions. The Agro-Livestock Association of Nessenos and Elatia, alongside the ‘Liodentro’ Olive Producers Group, has issued a resolution calling for immediate government intervention and financial support.
Producers report a significant decline in production due to adverse weather conditions during the flowering period and damage caused by the olive fruit fly. These issues are compounded by rising production costs—including fuel, fertilizer, electricity, and labor—as well as a shortage of seasonal workers and market pressure from imported olive oils.
Local representatives are urging the state to provide direct economic aid to offset losses and are calling for European Union assistance. Critics have pointed out the disparity between the state-guaranteed revenues provided to large infrastructure projects, such as the Moreas Motorway, and the lack of a safety net for farmers facing shrinking incomes and high operational risks.
