Emmanuel Karalis sworn into Greek Navy alongside Paris 2024 Olympic medalists

On 30 June 2026, Greek Olympic pole‑vaulter Emmanuel Karalis was commissioned as a flag officer (σημαιοφόρος) in the Hellenic Navy during a ceremony at the Officers’ Club of the Armed Forces. The oath was administered by boxing champion and Air Force officer Dionysios Psychogios.

The event also saw seven other athletes who won medals at the Paris 2024 Games receive officer commissions: rower Melena Kontou entered the Navy; swimmer Apostolos Christou, rower Zoe Fitsiou and judoka Theodoros Tselidis joined the Army; and rowers Demetra Eleni Kontou, Antonios Papakostantinos and Petros Gaïdatzis were inducted into the Air Force. Senior defence officials, including Deputy Defence Minister Thanasis Davakis and Chiefs of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and General Staff, attended.

The ceremony follows an established state practice of honouring Olympic medalists with military ranks, previously applied to athletes such as Leuteris Petrounias and Miltiadis Tentoglou. It underscores the symbolic link between sporting achievement and national service in Greece.
