Greek opposition criticizes New Democracy government over maritime policy

Lawyer and Member of Parliament Giannis Sarakiotis has criticized the New Democracy government for its perceived lack of a strategic plan to secure Greek sovereign rights in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

Sarakiotis argues that the administration has failed to adequately respond to the Turkey-Libya maritime memorandum, which he claims bypasses Greek rights east and south of Rhodes, Karpathos, Kasos, and Crete. He further contends that the government's 2021 extension of the continental shelf in the Ionian Sea was executed without a clear timeline or the inclusion of the strategically critical Kythira Strait.

The critique highlights a perceived shift from the opposition's previous stance, where New Democracy members had strongly criticized former government decisions regarding maritime zones as being too conciliatory toward Turkish positions.
