Greek opposition parties criticize government over rising cost of living
Opposition parties in Greece are intensifying their criticism of the New Democracy government regarding the rising cost of living and economic management.
The Niki party has targeted the government over the increasing price of bread, arguing that consumers are left vulnerable to inflation while bakers face severe financial strain. The party highlighted that bakers are struggling with energy costs rising by up to 40%, raw material increases of 10-15%, and monthly electricity bills ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 euros. Niki accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of prioritizing subsidies for large industrial units over supporting small businesses and essential goods.
Simultaneously, Kostas Tsoukalas, spokesperson for PASOK-Movement for Change, criticized the administration's economic policies, citing significant price hikes over the last five years. He noted that heating oil has increased by 85.8%, beef by 76.4%, and electricity by 58.8%. Tsoukalas argued that the current economic direction requires a fundamental change to protect household incomes and mitigate the burden on citizens.
