Greek opposition parties ELAS and SYRIZA face internal turmoil

Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the Greek Solution (ELAS), denounced Alexis Tsipras's party as a misuse of the historic ELAS name, calling Tsipras "a servant of oligarchs and cartels" and accusing the government of establishing a "tyrannical form of governance". He also criticised the handling of gender‑based violence, proposing harsh penalties for offenders.

Within the centre‑left SYRIZA party, internal divisions sharpen ahead of a Central Committee meeting. President Socrates Famelos urges unity, stating “unity is the only realistic option”, while MP Pavlos Polakis pushes for a stricter line and warns that a party without clear direction cannot survive. The possible return of Tsipras to politics and the prospect of a new party formed by him add further uncertainty, with three scenarios outlined for SYRIZA’s future: maintaining the current structure, forming a broader progressive alliance, or fragmenting under internal pressures.
