Greek Left Coalition ELAS Accuses Mitsotakis' 7‑Year Government Report of Fake News

The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS) held a press conference to denounce Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s seven‑year governmental report as riddled with “fake news” and distortions. Spokesperson Theoni Koufounikolaou, along with policy heads Francesc Koutentakis (Economics) and Dionysis Temponeas (Labor), argued that the government’s narrative overstated achievements and ignored setbacks.

ELAS highlighted several specific discrepancies: the claim that public debt fell by 63 points was based on a comparison between 2020 and 2019 figures that favoured the government; per‑capita income growth fell from the reported 36.5 % to 12.7 % when inflation is accounted for; wages, after inflation, align more with Bulgaria than the EU average; and pension increases were outpaced by a 19.8 % inflation rate. The coalition also pointed to a rise in private debt, a housing cost burden of 35.5 % of income, and a record number of scandals involving over 44 ministers, MPs and party officials, labeling the Mitsotakis administration “the most corrupt since the post‑dictatorship era.”

ELAS called for greater transparency, accountability and a thorough investigation of the alleged scandals, emphasizing that the report should serve as a tool for objective evaluation rather than partisan self‑praise.
