Greek opposition SYRIZA's new secretary calls Tsipras' criticism aggressive and urges renewal

Nikos Pappas, newly appointed secretary of SYRIZA’s Central Committee, described former party leader Alexis Tsipras’s statement that the party had “closed its historic cycle” as aggressive. Pappas said SYRIZA remains a progressive force, will take part in the coming elections, and is working to rebuild the party after recent internal turmoil.

He highlighted internal challenges, noting that some SYRIZA MPs are considering moving to Tsipras’s new party while keeping their seats, and criticised ELAS’s recent support for private universities. Pappas stressed the need for a clear political line and warned that such defections could weaken the party’s parliamentary strength.

The remarks are part of an effort to present SYRIZA as ready for electoral competition and to re‑unite the fragmented left ahead of the next election cycle.
