Orthodox Church marks July 5 feast of St. Athanasius and July 4 martyr commemorations

On July 5 the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of St. Athanasius of Athos and the six disciples who died with him when a newly rebuilt dome collapsed. The same day also honors St. Lampadios, Saint Kyprianos and the saints whose names include Lampadios, Lampadia, Lampadina and Lampadi.

On July 4 the calendar lists the martyrs Donatus, Theophilus, Theodotus and Theodoros, together with the virgin martyrs Cyprilla, Aroa, Lucia and Apollonius. The day also includes a commemoration of Saint Andrew, Archbishop of Crete, noted for his hymn‑writing and theological work.

Local observances were reported in Greek towns, such as a festive service in Arkalochori that featured clergy, municipal officials and the awarding of school‑children for academic achievement.
