Holy Cross Seven Martyrs August 1 Orthodox Dormition fast

On 1 August the Orthodox churches of Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia and Romania observe the Transfer of the Holy Cross and the memory of the Seven Maccabean martyrs with their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar. The day also marks the beginning of the two‑week Dormition (Assumption) fast that leads to the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos on 15 August. Traditional processions of the True Cross were held in Alexandroupoli and in the metropolitan cathedral of Larissa, while many parishes across the region performed special prayers and liturgies. The feast is also celebrated as a name‑day for people named Maqavei, Zdravko, Zdravka and related forms. Customs include blessing of herbs, honey and the first harvest of the year, and a prohibition on heavy physical work during the fast. The observance links ancient Byzantine rites with contemporary local traditions across the participating countries.
