Greek Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Sisoes and 24 martyrs on July 6

On Monday, 6 July, the Orthodox liturgical calendar marks the feast of the twenty‑four early‑Christian martyrs and the memory of Saint Sisoes the Great, a 4th‑century Egyptian hermit famed for his asceticism and humility. The day’s name‑day list also includes the rare personal names Lykios, Lykyas, Lykyia, Satyrus, Satios and Sisoes.

Saint Sisoes, a disciple of Saint Anthony, spent decades in the desert of Egypt, practicing strict fasting, continuous prayer and total self‑denial. Tradition records his contemplation before the tomb of Alexander the Great, where he lamented the fleeting nature of earthly glory.
