Greek Orthodox Metropolises hold annual Hieratic Assemblies

Various Greek Orthodox Metropolises held their annual Hieratic Assemblies to mark the beginning of the new ecclesiastical year on September 17, 2026.

In Mesolonghi, the Metropolis of Aitolia and Acarnania hosted its seventh anniversary assembly at the Holy Metropolitan Temple of Agios Spyridon. Metropolitan Damaskinos welcomed Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Mani, who served as the keynote speaker. Chrysostomos discussed the role of the Orthodox clergy in the Greek Revolution of 1821, describing the Church as a vital mechanism for maintaining national unity and identity during the Ottoman period.

Simultaneously, the Metropolis of Ierissos, Mount Athos, and Ardameri held its first assembly for the new period at the Holy Metropolitan Temple of Agios Stefanos in Arnai. Led by Metropolitan Theoklitos, the gathering featured Archimandrite Varnavas Giagkou as the main speaker. His presentation focused on the spiritual discernment required in the Sacrament of Confession, emphasizing the priest's role as a spiritual physician and the importance of respecting the believer's personality and freedom during the process of repentance.
