Greek Parliament Approves Extending Real Term of Life Sentences to 30 Years

The Greek Parliament voted to raise the minimum actual time served for multiple life‑imprisonment sentences from 25 to 30 years. The amendment, drafted by the Ministry of Justice, was supported by the New Democracy (ND) and PASOK‑KINAL parties and rejected by the KKE and SYRIZA opposition.

The change was presented by Justice Minister George Floridis in response to public outcry over the temporary release of convicted terrorist Alexander Giotopoulos and the possible September 2027 release of another multiple‑life prisoner, Dimitris Kofontinas. Lawmakers said the longer term will better match the severity of crimes and provide a clearer basis for parole eligibility under the “release under revocation” provision.
