Greek Parliament SLAPP bill EU Directive 2024/1069 New Democracy ministerial amendments

The Greek Ministry of Justice presented a bill to incorporate EU Directive 2024/1069 and introduce measures that protect journalists, activists and the public from strategic lawsuits (SLAPPs). The legislation also creates a new framework for administrative compliance with court decisions. In the plenary vote, the governing New Democracy (ND) party supported the bill, while the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), SYRIZA and the Freedom Movement voted against it; PASOK‑KINAL, Greek Solution and New Democracy (Nika) abstained. Two ministerial amendments were approved alongside the bill. The first raises the real‑penalty ceiling for multiple life‑sentence offences, tightens the “mastrapeía” offence, shortens training for prosecutor trainees and repeals a civil‑procedure article. The second adds public‑health initiatives, funding for substitute teachers for the 2026‑27 school year and changes to agricultural support provisions, including faster payments to about 24,000 young farmers.
