Greek parliament passes New Democracy's constitutional revision proposal

The parliamentary committee tasked with reviewing the Greek Constitution completed its work, recording serious disagreements but moving forward with the draft. New Democracy (ND) voted in favor of the entire package of constitutional amendments, while PASOK was present but abstained on fifteen articles where it presented its own proposals. The opposition parties KKE, SYRIZA, Greek Solution and NIKI voted against the ND proposal.

During the debate, ND legislator Euripides Stylianides argued that the permanence of civil servants has become a shield for bureaucracy, inefficiency and even corruption, stating it “has become more a protection for the employees themselves than a mechanism for continuous evaluation and meritocracy.” PASOK’s Panagiotis Doudounis, KKE’s Giannis Dellis and SYRIZA’s Theophilos Xanthopoulos criticised the draft, describing it as a neoliberal move that would burden public employees. The committee chair, Makis Voridis, praised the high‑level dialogue. The next steps include a two‑day plenary discussion on 23–24 July, a first plenary vote on 27 July, and a second vote a month later, with the amended articles requiring a super‑majority of 180 votes to pass.
