Greek Parliament President Kaklamanis urges Albania to align laws with EU standards

Greek Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis met Albanian parliamentary speaker Niko Peleshi to discuss Albania’s progress toward European Union membership. Kaklamanis stressed that Albania must adapt its national legislation to the EU legal framework, as “the country’s path to Europe depends largely on you.”

He highlighted two specific issues: the property regime of assets belonging to the Greek minority in Albania and the respect for the minority’s national identity, linking both to Albania’s administrative reforms. Kaklamanis said the Greek Parliament will monitor these matters closely and suggested that parliamentary diplomacy could achieve better results than governmental negotiations.

Peleshi thanked Greece for its support of Albania’s EU aspirations and described the Greek minority in Albania and the Albanian community in Greece as “two very strong bridges” between the nations. During the meeting Kaklamanis presented Peleshi with the Greek Parliament’s Gold Medal, and Peleshi replied with a silver miniature of local Albanian dress.
