Hellenic Parliament rejects immunity lifting for Avgenakis and Lazaridis

The Hellenic Parliament has held several votes regarding the lifting of parliamentary immunity for various members.

In a significant outcome for the ruling New Democracy party, the Parliament rejected requests to lift the immunity of Lefteris Avgenakis and Makarios Lazaridis. For both cases, 151 MPs voted against the lifting of immunity. The Avgenakis case involves an investigation into an allegedly inaccurate asset declaration, while the Lazaridis case concerns allegations of fraud related to his academic credentials. The voting process saw internal differentiation within the New Democracy group, with some members voting according to conscience or abstaining.

Conversely, the Parliament approved the lifting of immunity for Zoi Konstantopoulou, president of Plevesi Eleftherias, in two separate cases. These involve allegations of defamatory statements against a judicial official and an incident involving the unauthorized filming of a person during a court hearing.

Additionally, the Parliamentary Ethics Committee recommended lifting the immunity of SYRIZA MP Pavlos Polakis following a complaint of false accusation, while recommending against lifting the immunity of New Democracy MPs Thano Plevris and Takis Theodorakakos regarding allegations of illegal personal data processing. The final decisions on the latter two cases remain pending before the plenary session.
