Greek Parliament sees surge in political party transfers
A significant shift in political affiliations is occurring within the Hellenic Parliament as lawmakers seek new party memberships ahead of upcoming national elections. Currently, approximately one in five MPs lacks formal party affiliation, with the number of independent members reaching 51. When accounting for those who have resigned or joined other formations, nearly one-fifth of the MPs elected in June 2023 are no longer with their original parties.
This period of political mobility is driven by the need for lawmakers to secure a platform for reelection and for political parties to bolster their parliamentary presence and local organizational influence. While the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has remained stable, other parties are actively engaging in recruitment. Notably, PASOK has been a recipient of recent high-profile movements, such as that of former Minister of National Defense and former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, Evangelos Apostolakis, who moved from SYRIZA.
