Greek Left Alliance urges 80% of state money to repay ND, PASOK debt

The Greek Left Alliance (ELAS) has put forward a proposal that 80 % of the regular state funding received by the two indebted parties, New Democracy (ND) and PASOK, be earmarked for the repayment of their bank loans. The plan also calls for elected officials elected on the lists of those parties – MPs, MEPs and other candidates – to contribute 50 % of their parliamentary allowances toward the parties’ debts. ELAS demands that all financial data of the parties be published annually so citizens can see the exact amounts owed and repaid.

According to the parties’ 2025 balance sheets, ND’s liabilities rose by €60.2 million and PASOK’s by €60.7 million, bringing the combined debt of the two parties to about €1.16 trillion, the bulk of which is owed to banks. Neither party has presented a concrete repayment schedule, and ELAS criticises them for continuing to receive public money while their debts exceed €1.1 trillion.

The proposal has sparked a sharp exchange between ELAS and PASOK, with PASOK accusing ELAS and its leader Alex Tsipras of “re‑branding” and of hiding funding sources, while ELAS maintains that it is funded by volunteers and members, not by banks.
