Greek PM Mitsotakis condemns Thessaloniki arson attack and pledges accountability

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis denounced the fatal arson attack in Thessaloniki, stating that no ideological motive can justify a murderous act and asserting that the perpetrators will be brought before the courts. He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to confront violence and lawlessness, urging political parties to avoid toxic rhetoric.

Mitsotakis also outlined several economic measures: a price freeze for about 2,000 consumer items in July and August, with plans for further reductions in essential goods from September; a €150 child‑benefit payment already delivered to roughly 950,000 families; and agricultural subsidies totaling €617 million for about 530,000 recipients. He announced the removal of a cut to widows’ pensions, keeping benefits at 70 % without retroactive repayment, and highlighted an OECD report indicating Greece’s shift from brain drain to brain gain.

In health policy, he noted the opening of the renovated Panteleimon Children’s Hospital and the recruitment of 962 doctors and over 8,000 health‑care staff by 2026. The prime minister concluded by mentioning upcoming housing projects for doctors on the islands funded by EU funds.
