Greek PM Mitsotakis honors fallen firefighters and announces safety, water and nuclear reforms

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis opened a cabinet meeting by paying tribute to two firefighters who died while battling wildfires, saying the state stands with their families and will strengthen protection against the effects of the climate crisis. He linked daily‑life issues such as road safety and water management to the government’s reform agenda.

Mitsotakis announced a road‑safety campaign for the summer, including targeted driver information and the rollout of AI‑powered traffic cameras. He confirmed the adoption of a structural water‑management reform that ends fragmented ownership and protects water as a public good. He also created an inter‑ministerial committee to conduct a scientific assessment of the prospects for nuclear energy in Greece. Progress on the national recovery fund was noted, with 117 projects slated for completion by the end of August. The Prime Minister briefly referred to positive developments in Cyprus following the UN Secretary‑General’s visit.
