Greek government pledges 2027 elections, rejects early vote

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis told ONE that the ruling New Democracy will complete its four‑year term and hold national elections on a Sunday in 2027, dismissing calls for an early poll despite favourable opinion polls. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis echoed the message during a visit to North Euboea, highlighting completed projects such as a new artificial‑kidney unit, tourism growth, lower unemployment and upgrades to the National Health System, and urging citizens to be ready for the spring‑2027 vote.

Marinakis also addressed the OPEKEPE corruption investigation, noting that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office has archived the cases of seven of the eleven New Democracy MPs under scrutiny and reaffirmed the presumption of innocence for the remaining four. He criticised opposition remarks labeling the government as “a government of criminals” and called for an apology, warning that politicising the judiciary undermines public trust in democratic institutions.
