Greek police minister Chrysochidis outlines security priorities amid upcoming police union protest
The Panhellenic Federation of Police Officers (POASY) announced a mass demonstration for 4 September 2026 at Thessaloniki’s White Tower, demanding improvements in pension legislation, a longer non‑violent service term, higher daily allowances, the establishment of 13th and 14th salaries and the removal of the solidarity contribution.
Minister for Citizen Protection Mihalis Chrysochidis reiterated that security is a democratic right and stressed the government's focus on a professional, accountable police force. He reported that the Thessaloniki Police Directorate recorded improvements across all crime‑handling indicators in the first half of 2026, cited the recent terrorist‑related killing of Vagia Nestor, and said suspects have been arrested and sent to the courts. The minister vowed that no criminal group will be allowed to gain a foothold in neighborhoods, sports venues, nightlife or the local economy, and outlined plans for the second half of 2026 to increase visible policing and accelerate response times.
