Greek political figures criticize municipal neglect and judicial reforms
In Kalamata, opposition leader Vasilis Tzamouranis has criticized Mayor Thanasis Vasilopoulos for refusing to participate in a Municipal Council debate regarding the neglect of historical buildings. Tzamouranis highlighted the deteriorating state of the ‘Achilleion’ hotel and the former Economic High School, describing them as abandoned and hazardous structures. He called for specific commitments and funding to restore these architectural landmarks.
Separately, PASOK Deputy Institutions and Transparency Secretary Thomas Papaliagas has criticized new regulations regarding third-party asset seizures. Effective September 1, 2026, the process requires mandatory digital filings through the Federation of Judicial Bailiffs of Greece platform, necessitating legal representation. Papaliagas argues that these procedural complexities and additional fees make the justice system increasingly expensive and inaccessible to ordinary citizens.
