Greek political landscape shows space for moderate center-right

There is a growing political space in Greece for a moderate, liberal center-right movement that combines market economics with strict border controls. This ideological framework aligns with the historical tradition of the New Democracy party, characterized by economic liberalism, pro-Europeanism, and an emphasis on security and the rule of law.

Societal shifts in Greece have led to more conservative views on migration. Policies such as border protection, the return of irregular migrants, and the ‘safe third country’ asylum concept, once considered extreme, have become mainstream. Additionally, the post-debt crisis era has increased social legitimacy for market economies, shifting the political debate from whether a market is necessary to the appropriate role of the state.

Despite this, the term ‘liberal’ often lacks positive resonance among Greek voters. Many who support lower taxes, private investment, and strict border enforcement prefer to identify as patriots, conservatives, or pragmatists rather than liberals. Consequently, successful political entities may find better prospects by combining economic liberalization with strong institutions rather than running on a purely liberal platform.
