Greek political leaders criticize fiscal management and US ties
Political figures in Greece have issued criticisms regarding the government's fiscal management and foreign policy. Fragiskos Koutentakis, the finance spokesperson for ELAS, argued that the government has exhausted fiscal reserves by using budget surpluses for immediate benefits and new commitments rather than maintaining them as a safety net. He noted significant discrepancies between government forecasts and actual primary spending for 2024 and 2025, suggesting that any potential fiscal space appearing in April might be used as a pre-election tool.
Separately, Dimitris Koutsoumpas, leader of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), criticized the country's strategic alignment with the United States during a rally in Athens. Following the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Koutsoumpas claimed that Greece's cooperation with Washington imposes high economic and social costs on citizens, including energy poverty and high taxation. He further criticized increased military spending and the promotion of the 'Vertical Corridor' for American LNG, asserting that these policies turn the country into a military target and increase energy costs for the population.
