Greek political tensions rise over government integrity and unemployment benefits
Former New Democracy MP Kostas Tzavaras has launched a sharp critique against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the current administration. Tzavaras, who cited the wiretapping scandal as a primary reason for his departure from Parliament, stated that he has aligned himself with Antonis Samaras. He criticized the government for prioritizing communication strategies over substantive politics and claimed that his departure was misrepresented as being for medical reasons rather than political disagreement.
Simultaneously, the political opposition party New Left has criticized Prime Minister Mitsotakis for his silence regarding proposed changes to unemployment benefits. The party expressed concern over a suggestion that benefits should only be provided for two months following job loss, calling the Prime Minister's lack of a formal response to the resulting public backlash “worrying.” New Left is demanding clarity on whether the government intends to alter the current framework for unemployment assistance.
