Greek President's remarks on Çamëria spark historical dispute
Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas has reignited historical tensions regarding the Çamëria region during a memorial ceremony in Paramithi. While honoring 49 Greek civilians executed in 1943, Tasoulas referenced the role of some Muslim Çam populations in collaborating with Italian and German occupation forces. He also cited decisions from the 1946 Special Court of Ioannina, which issued over 1,700 rulings against Muslim Çams and included property confiscations.
The Çamëria Foundation ‘Hasan Tahsini’ has responded by condemning the use of historical victims to assign collective guilt to the Albanian population. While the Foundation expressed respect for the Greek victims, it argued that criminal responsibility must be individual rather than collective. The Foundation also criticized the President for linking the Çam issue to Albania’s European Union integration and called for the public release of the 1946 court decisions to ensure transparency and identify specific individuals responsible for crimes.
