Kyriakos Mitsotakis pushes island projects ahead of 2027 Greek election
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has dismissed calls for an early election and outlined a nine‑month programme that will run until the scheduled national vote in spring 2027. As part of the pre‑election strategy he has toured the Dodecanese islands of Leros and Agathonisi, announcing a €45 million package of infrastructure works.
The projects include a major upgrade of the Leros hospital’s emergency and surgical departments, a €6 million energy‑efficiency retrofit, expansion of the port of Lakka and the construction of a new cruise‑ship berth capable of handling up to 70 vessels. Mitsotakis links these investments to a broader narrative of “security and stability”, stressing tighter border control, reduced migrant flows and the benefits of a stronger armed forces.
The government also highlights Greece’s upcoming role as President of the European Union Council in 2027, positioning it as a test of the country's political stability. Within the ruling New Democracy party, members are already preparing candidate lists and internal ballot rules, with the prime minister stating that any MP wishing to run must resign by August.
