Greek PM Mitsotakis links 2027 election to €49.5 bn EU budget talks

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told the Government Economic Policy Council that the EU’s new Multi‑annual Financial Framework (2028‑2034) proposes €49.5 billion for Greece, with the possibility of additional funding from the €450 billion Competitiveness Fund. He said negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of 2026, but could also be finalised during Greece’s EU Council presidency in the second half of 2027. Mitsotakis connected the outcome to the spring‑2027 national elections, stating that voters will decide “which government will represent the country in a crucial European negotiation.”

He also highlighted progress on major infrastructure, including the opening of the E65 highway, work on the North Crete road axis, rail‑link upgrades, energy interconnections for the North and South Aegean, and the Thessaloniki flyover slated for completion in early 2027.

In the same briefing, Mitsotakis addressed the OPEKEPE scandal, noting that nine of the 13 New Democracy officials involved have been cleared of charges while investigations continue for four others. He described the cleared members as “honest politicians who were harassed for weeks.”
