Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis Sets Election Date for Spring 2027

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that Greece will hold national elections in the spring of 2027, with the most likely dates being 23 May or 30 May. The timing is intended to complete the government’s four‑year term and is tied to the rollout of economic measures, the assessment of opposition resilience, and Greece’s upcoming EU Council presidency in 2027.

Analysts note that the election schedule will affect newer political formations. The party led by Maria Karystianou, which entered the scene two months ago and briefly held third place in polls, is experiencing internal turmoil and falling support. ELAS has risen to second place, while PASOK remains third. If the vote occurs in autumn, the party of Alexis Tsipras may try to cement its position as the main opposition to the governing New Democracy. Antonis Samaras is also preparing to launch his own party ahead of the election, regardless of the exact date.
