Greek psychiatric associations call for reform of minor hospital placements

The Hellenic Psychiatric Association and the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Society of Greece have issued a joint call for urgent reforms regarding the placement of minors in general hospitals. Due to a severe lack of social welfare infrastructure, children who are abandoned or abused are frequently placed in general hospital clinics via prosecutorial orders.

While these placements are intended to be temporary for pediatric or psychiatric evaluations, they often turn into long-term stays lasting several months. Medical professionals argue that hospitals are spaces for medical care and should not function as makeshift social care or detention facilities for children.

Experts warn that this practice poses significant risks to the children, including biological dangers, reduced personal safety, and increased risk of accidents. Furthermore, the environment causes severe emotional distress due to the lack of clear prospects, constant changes in caregivers, and the trauma of being placed in an unsuitable setting.
