Greek public engineers demand permanent staffing and higher pay

Public engineers from the EMDYDAS association of Western Macedonia participated in protests at the Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace and during the Prime Minister’s speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair on September 5, 2026. The group presented seven core demands aimed at strengthening public technical services.

Key demands include staffing services through permanent and stable hires rather than temporary contracts or private entities. The engineers advocate for the preservation of public authority in technical matters to protect the public interest and the environment, opposing the transfer of responsibilities to the private sector.

Economic demands include real salary increases to attract new scientists, the restoration of the 7‰ sectoral allowance, and the full recognition of private sector experience. They also seek salary recognition for Integrated Master degrees for all engineers. Additionally, the group calls for the abolition of a disciplinary law they claim threatens public employees with unfair dismissal, requesting better legal protection. Finally, they oppose the dissolution of Building Services through integration into the Land Registry, calling instead for a strong, unified, and constitutionally protected urban planning system.
