Greek Red Cross conducts water‑safety campaign and army rescue training

The Greek Red Cross, together with the municipality of Palaio Faliro, marked World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July 2026 with a public water‑safety event at Edem beach. More than 150 children and adults took part in demonstrations of the organisation’s Lifesaver and Junior Lifesaver programmes, received free practical instruction on safe swimming, water‑rescue techniques and first‑aid measures, and were awarded participation certificates. The event was attended by Greek Red Cross President Dr Antonios Avgerinos, General Secretary Georgios Skoumas and Mayor Giannis Fotostropoulos, who praised the community’s interest in drowning‑prevention education.

In a separate initiative, the Greek Red Cross completed a training programme for 117 personnel from the Special Disaster‑Response Units (ETAK) of the Greek Army. Conducted at engineering units in Thessaloniki, Larissa and Loutraki, the course was led by Director of Training Zeki Memet Ali and covered basic first‑aid, CPR, AED use, emergency medical care and disaster‑response skills. Participants earned the “General‑Duty Rescuer” diploma, enhancing the army’s operational readiness for emergencies and natural‑disaster scenarios.
