Greek regional universities see sharp drop in student admissions
The University of Aegean on the island of Karpathos reported that only four candidates were admitted to its Mathematics Department this year, sparking concerns about the department's future. The university is exploring the inclusion of the mathematics programme in the 4th scientific field and has launched a new master's in Oenotourism to broaden its appeal.
Meanwhile, the University of Crete’s campuses in Rethymno recorded a steep decline in admission quotas across multiple faculties, leaving hundreds of seats vacant. Only 33 of 129 Philosophy places, 64 of 198 Philology places, and 40 of 148 History‑Archaeology places were filled. High living costs, scarce affordable housing and uncertain job prospects were cited as primary reasons for the low enrollment, prompting the university to plan new student housing projects and other measures to revive the town’s role as a university centre.
