Greek researchers study toxic pufferfish for cosmetic use
Researchers in Greece are investigating whether the toxic pufferfish species Lagocephalus sceleratus, an invasive species in the eastern Mediterranean, can be repurposed for commercial use. Having entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, this fish poses significant challenges to the fishing industry due to its toxicity and teeth that can damage equipment.
Studies conducted through the National Technical University of Athens are examining the biological components of the fish, including its flesh, skin, bones, and internal organs. The research aims to determine if these parts can provide valuable compounds such as collagen, omega-3 fatty acids, and tetrodotoxin (TTX).
Part of a broader circular bioeconomy approach, the research explores the potential development of experimental cosmetic formulations. While these products are not yet on the market, scientists are working to establish if such applications are technically and commercially viable.
