Greek retirees face potential reduction in solidarity contribution deductions

A pending judicial decision in Greece could significantly reduce monthly deductions for approximately 440,000 retirees. The case, scheduled for discussion at the Court of Audit on October 7, 2026, focuses on the calculation mechanism of the Pensioners' Solidarity Contribution (EAS).

Currently, the EAS is applied to the total pension amount once a certain threshold is met. For main pensions, this applies to amounts exceeding 1,468 euros, while for supplementary pensions, it applies to amounts over 300 euros. The dispute centers on whether the contribution should be levied on the entire pension or only on the portion of income that exceeds the established limit.

The Rapporteur has reportedly suggested a move toward a progressive calculation based on brackets. If the court accepts this approach, which is also supported by the Greek Ombudsman, some retirees could see their EAS burden reduced by as much as 50%.
