Greek Road Code imposes 700‑euro solo‑driver fine and up to €8,000 for extreme speed
Greece has introduced a revised Road Code (KOK) that makes driving alone without a qualified co‑driver punishable by a €700 fine and possible licence withdrawal. The restriction applies to drivers under 18 who hold a temporary licence and must be accompanied by a co‑driver aged 25 or older, as well as to older drivers whose health conditions require a co‑driver, recorded with a special code on their licence.
The same legislation also tightens penalties for excessive speed. Exceeding 200 km/h can attract a €2,000 fine and a one‑year licence suspension, while repeat offences within five years can lead to fines up to €8,000 and licence bans of up to four years. Violations are detected by mobile radars and cameras, with electronic notifications and the right to appeal.
These measures aim to curb dangerous driving behaviours, especially during the summer travel period when traffic volumes rise on Greek roads.
