Greek schools face opening delays and staffing gaps in September

The new building for the 4th Gymnasium of Aspropyrgos is scheduled to open for classes in September, mayor Giannis Iliadis told the municipal council. Work on an electrical sub‑station and final safety measures is under way, ending a months‑long period when the modern facility could not be used.

In the neighbouring region of Achaia, 11 schools will start the new academic year without appointed headteachers. Education official Tasos Stavroygiannopoulos warned that the lack of permanent directors could cause serious disruption for students and teachers, saying “No one thinks about the students, the teachers and the disruption of schools.” Temporary appointments are expected, which may trigger a chain of staff reassignments after the first weeks of classes.
