Greek Shipping Minister Reports First Drop in Migrant Arrivals from Libya

Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vasylis Kiki̱lias announced that Greece recorded a 3% decline in illegal migrant arrivals from Libya, with 8,734 entries this year versus 8,968 in the same period last year – the first decrease since the route opened. He added that the combined flow from Turkey and Libya fell by 34%, with Turkish arrivals down 61%.

Kiki̱lias praised the Coast Guard personnel for their “modern hero” efforts in securing the maritime borders and conducting rescues. He noted that two Greek vessels and a tug are currently operating in the Persian Gulf, with the ministry closely monitoring the situation amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz that could affect fuel prices and inflation. The minister also emphasized the need for strong national capabilities and modern technology to support diplomatic negotiations and protect Greece’s islands and maritime interests.
