Greek sports sees referee controversy and athletics medal surge

Former international football referee Tasos Sidiroplous said he intends to continue his refereeing career until Christmas, respecting the decision of the Hellenic Football Federation (KED). He criticised the influx of foreign referees, the lack of professional pay for Greek officials and urged greater meritocracy and incentives for young referees.

At the Balkan Athletics Championships in Volos, Greece secured a record haul of 39 medals, including 13 golds, the highest total since 1998. The Greek team topped the medal count for the second consecutive edition, with strong performances from both men and women across track, field and relay events.
