Greek State Funding Sparks Outcry Over Lupita Nyong’o Casting in Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “Odyssey”, shot in Messinia and other sites in Greece, has drawn intense public debate after the director chose Lupita Nyong’o to play the “Beautiful Helen”. Critics argue the casting departs from the traditional white depiction of Helen in Homeric tradition and accuse the production of following a “woke” agenda.

The controversy intensified when details emerged that the Greek state granted the film more than €6 million in public financing. Greek politicians and cultural commentators have questioned the use of taxpayer money for a project they say distorts Greek heritage, while figures such as Elon Musk also voiced criticism on social media.

The film is slated for release in July and has already become a flashpoint for discussions on cultural representation, state subsidies, and the influence of international Hollywood productions in Greece.
