Greek students face high costs and housing shortages as new academic year begins
As the new academic year begins in Greece, university students face a combination of welcoming academic milestones and significant economic challenges. In Chania, first-year students are struggling with a severe housing crisis and high living costs. Estimates suggest that staying in Chania requires between 800 and 1,000 euros per month, covering rent, utilities, food, and transportation. Only 4.8% of students at the Technical University of Crete are covered by university dormitories, leaving the vast majority to navigate an expensive private market.
In contrast, the President of the University of Patras, Christos Bouras, has issued a welcoming message to incoming freshmen. He encouraged students to use their university years to develop social awareness and emotional maturity, urging them to embrace critical thinking and challenge existing perspectives. Bouras emphasized the importance of democracy, humanism, and the rejection of all forms of violence as students begin their higher education journeys.
