Inflation in Greek supermarkets eased to 0.39% month‑on‑month in June, while the 12‑month index rose to 1.56%, according to data from the Institute of Retail Research (IEELKA). Out of 23 product categories, 14 saw price increases and nine fell.

The biggest declines were recorded for pet food (-5.56%), breakfast items and drinks (-2.60%), frozen goods (-2.53%), detergents and cleaning supplies (-2.02%) and toiletries (-1.06%). The sharpest rises were in cold cuts (+4.80%), ready‑to‑eat meals (+3.91%), baby and child foods (+3.62%), dairy products and refrigerated juices (+3.59%) and bottled water, soft drinks and fruit juices (+3.37%).

Analysts attribute the overall containment of supermarket prices to the large sales volumes of major chains, economies of scale, rapid inventory turnover and the growing share of private‑label products, which together help keep price pressure lower than in smaller retailers. The supermarket sector accounts for roughly 10% of total consumer‑price inflation, which stands at 3.9% overall.
