Greek supermarkets record -0.47% inflation in July 2026

A monthly survey by the Institute of Retail Trade Consumer Goods (ΙΕΛΚΑ) shows that prices in major Greek supermarket chains fell 0.47% year‑on‑year in July 2026, the lowest reading since December 2024. On a month‑to‑month basis the index dropped 0.77% compared with June 2026. The twelve‑month rolling index (August 2025 – July 2026) remains 1.37% above the same period a year earlier.

Both sub‑indices moved into negative territory: the food index –0.25% and the non‑food index –1.47%. The sharpest price declines were recorded for fresh fruit and vegetables (‑6.97%), pet food (‑5.21%), fresh meat and poultry (‑4.27%), breakfast items and beverages (‑1.98%) and dairy products (‑1.69%). The biggest increases were seen in ready‑to‑eat meals (+3.75%), water, soft drinks and juices (+3.26%), eggs, butter and broths (+2.99%), nuts (+2.79%) and delicatessen items (+2.71%).

ΙΕΛΚΑ attributes the overall price containment to market stabilisation, lower producer prices, favourable weather for crops, a higher share of private‑label products and faster inventory turnover in large chains. Government officials, including the Ministry of Development and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, have highlighted the trend as evidence that coordinated price‑control measures are taking effect.
